Subscriptions

Claims

Most claims will be honored only if the claim is RECEIVED within six months of the publication date (Note: Cumulative Edition subscriptions to Canada must be claimed within 90 days of shipping as the United States Postal Service requires that claims for Express Mail delivery be made within 90 days.).

Cancellations and Standing Orders

A subscription may be canceled at any time for UNSHIPPED portions of a subscription, however, once orders have been shipped they CANNOT be returned for a refund.  Cumulative volumes cannot be returned for a refund once shipped.  If a Quarterly subscription is canceled in the middle of the subscription each issue that has been shipped will be assessed at the regular single issue price plus $5.00 for shipping each issue outside of the U.S. before refunds are made.  In addition, a $25.00 processing fee will be charged for all cancellations involving a refund.  Standing orders must be canceled in writing and received before the shipping of each publication and payment must be made within 30 days of receipt of the Cumulative Volume or the first Quarterly issue.  For Quarterly standing orders, shipping will be suspended after the first issue if payment has not been received by the publication date of the second issue.  Note: Standing Orders or subscriptions for individuals are not accepted through agencies.

Cancellations may be made by e-mail, fax or mail.  You may cancel by phone, but it must be followed by a written cancellation and received by us before a refund of unshipped portions of a subscription can be made.

Submitting Materials to The Philosopher's Index

Attention Publishers

If you publish books in any field of philosophy, please send us ONE copy of each book for indexing in The Philosopher’s Index.

If you publish a philosophy journal that is currently not regularly indexed, please refer to the policies under “Submission of New Journals for Regular Indexing”.

Submission of New Journals for Regular Indexing

In order to be included in The Philosopher’s Index for regular indexing, all new journals have to be approved by the editor and/or the editorial board.  We need the following in order to have the journal considered for regular indexing (Note to Electronic Journals: For indexing purposes we MUST receive a hard copy of each electronic journal issue):

(1) One copy of at least two different recent issues.
(2) The following information about the journal:

Title:
Subtitle:
ISSN number:
Frequency of publication:
Approximate circulation:
Aim of the journal:
Are the articles refereed?:
Editorial board members and affiliations (departments/institutions):
Address to which interested subscribers would write:
E-mail and Website Addresses:

You can e-mail the above information to us or include it when you send copies of the journal to be considered to the following address:

The Philosopher's Information Center
1616 East Wooster Street, Suite 34
Bowling Green, Ohio  43402
USA

Please note that the first criterion for inclusion is that an average of at least 50% of the articles in each issue are philosophical.

Once a journal is accepted, we need a complimentary subscription (one copy only of each issue please) for all future issues as well as permission to publish any short abstract that is published in the journal with a given article. (Note: We do try to include as many abstracts as possible so we encourage you to publish an abstract with each article or help us obtain abstracts by providing authors’ mailing or e-mail addresses on a regular basis.)

If the journal is accepted for regular indexing we can usually go back one or two years in the indexing depending on if it is a new publication or not.

Submitting Abstracts and Citations for Published Works in Philosophy

If you have checked the latest issue of the CD-ROM/online versions of The Philosopher's Index and have not seen your work cited, then please read the following to see how you can get your work cited in the Index.

JOURNAL ARTICLES in JOURNALS THAT WE INDEX REGULARLY: (Click here for a complete list of journals currently being indexed): These entries are made automatically as we receive issues of the journal from the publishers. If a short abstract appears with the article the editor may choose to use it or an edited version of the abstract; otherwise, we send an abstract request form to you provided we have your current address in our database or if it is listed in the journal.

If your article appeared in an earlier issue of the journal before we began indexing it regularly or perhaps in a missing issue that we did not receive, the citation can then still be added since there already exists a "link" in the computer to the journal name. Please send the following information:

Article title:
Article subtitle:
Author's name(s) as it/they appear(s): (Family name first for alphabetizing):
Page numbers: beginning and ending
Full journal title/subtitle (no abbreviations):
Language of the article:
Volume, Issue Number and Year of Publication (including month and/or quarter if used; e.g., 25(4) Nov 2003 or 22(6) Summer 2003):
ISSN of the journal (if the journal has no ISSN, write "No ISSN")
Short Abstract in English (preferred), but it can also be in German, French, Italian or Spanish (up to 100 words; please do not include logic symbols or Greek letters):
Please suggest 5-8 keywords (subject headings) in English including important named persons (with complete first/last names):

JOURNAL ARTICLES in JOURNALS THAT WE DO NOT INDEX REGULARLY: If your journal article appears in a philosophy journal that we do not index regularly, we ask you first to try to have the journal submit documentation to be considered for regular indexing by the editor and/or the editorial board (for details look in this section of the website, under "Submission of New Journals for Indexing".)

At the editor's discretion, we can add a lone article from a journal that we do not regularly index (such as refereed interdisciplinary journals), but we must have the following information:

Article title:
Article subtitle:
Author's name(s) as it/they appear(s): (Family name first for alphabetizing):

Please suggest 5-8 keywords (subject headings) in English including important named persons (with complete first/last names):

BOOKS: Authors and major publishers usually send us one copy of philosophy publications for indexing. This is preferred. However, if this is not possible, then you must send us the full bibliographic citation: (For multi-authored books with chapters by different authors we prefer to receive one copy of the book so that each contribution can also be indexed; see "Contributions to an anthology" below)

ISBN:

CONTRIBUTIONS TO AN ANTHOLOGY: (i.e., books with chapters by different authors): It is the editor's policy and preference, when possible, that we receive one copy of the anthology itself so that ALL the articles can be indexed properly. (A link has to be established between each article and the book itself in the database.) Otherwise, the book as a whole can be indexed by submitting the information for BOOKS above. If necessary, we can also carefully index an anthology and return it to you. In this case, please mark it clearly that you wish to have the publication returned and send "to the attention of Douglas Wayland".  If you are unable to send the anthology itself, then a contribution can be added provided you supply both the complete information for the book itself (including citation information and suggested keywords outlined under "Books" above) as well as for the contribution itself:
